Claude becomes number one app on the U.S. App Store

- Obvious political reasons and implications aside, a clear quality gap opened up late last year when Opus 4.5 was released vs. GPT-5. Opus was obviously and demonstrably superior to any GPT-5 tier. The release of GPT-5.2 didn't improve matters, and then Opus 4.6 widened the gap further. Right now talking to GPT-5.2 Pro is 10x slower than chatting with Opus 4.6 and the output returned is, nevertheless, generally lower quality and more "sloppy."
What I'm getting at is that this could be, in part, because Claude is genuinely better at this point in time.

- I was going to say that I was surprised that enough "normal" users had heard about the Pentagon news story that it would make a difference.
Then I remembered that the app store rankings [1] seem to be based on activity from just the past day or so.
And so a lot of "plugged-in" users switching to Claude all at once then would be enough to briefly send Claude to #1, since the migration would be sizeable in comparison to the normal daily download baseline.
But we can also expect that this would probably be just a blip for a couple of days, as it's unlikely to make much difference in the baseline ratio for the general population.

- The real story here is "how the hell did Dick's Sporting Goods get to #3 and how can I get me some of their magic dust?"

- Anyone else having issues exporting their data from ChatGPT? I started my export in the morning, still have yet to receive an email for the download. Wanted to make sure my deleted account was included in the beans when they count them on Monday.
- I think their ads are better than chatgpt’s. I’ve seen them more recently encouraging people to “keep thinking” and use it to improve themselves
- I'd just been using the free version of OpenAI for my easy tasks, so as not to waste my Claude credits on them. About time I deleted it and gave it the poor review it deserves.
- Why is Dick's Sporting Goods in the top 3?
- It’s irritating to me that on iOS at least I can’t be logged in with both my work AND home Claude instances in the native app. I instead have to log in to the app with one and use a desktop shortcut to claude.ai for the other.
- I cancelled ChatGPT and downloaded Claude mobile 1 day before the controversy because I decided to go all in on Claude Code. The chat app isn't quite as good as ChatGPT, feels like a year behind in integration with stuff like web search and retrieval. But it does the job.
- rsync.net is (minimally) an openai customer. I've used it mostly as a curiosity but others here have used it in more professional manner.
When we created the account we shared essentially zero personal information and used a purpose-specific email, etc. No ID scans, no passports, no robust ID verification. It is a company account, after all, so it would make no sense to tie it to a particular person ...
All of this to ask:
In 2026, if I choose to boycott openAI on behalf of my firm, and perhaps sign up for Claude with the intention of using either the web interface or a terminal CLI ... what will be demanded in terms of identity and personal information ?
- I just searched the play store to download claude myself. I had to scroll a page and a half past sex bot apps to find it.
Meanwhile I have a working desktop app but this magic email link nonsense doesnt seem to work on my phone.

- I've never looked at the app store rankings before. Number 3 is a app for buying shoes? That seems quite specific.

- I wonder if this is related to the Pentagon incident. Dario's interview with the CBS has a lot of views too.

- That’s what happens when a bunch of us delete our OpenAI accounts, delete ChatGPT, and download Claude
- Yeah, dropped ChatGPT today. Downloaded the desktop version of Claude.
I won't go back.

- ChatGPT and Gemini's coding capabilities are being left in the dust they'd better catch up or be irrelevant fast.

- And Dick's Sporting Goods beats Google Gemini to become the 3rd app on US App Store, like what are we doing here?

- OpenAI bribed Trump: https://garymarcus.substack.com/p/the-whole-thing-was-scam
- As usual, the corporations benefiting from supporting war and subverting the rights of everyday citizens is rewarded by massive subsidies by the capitalist state.
Anthropic currently is winning the public sentiment war, but OpenAI is being established as another to-big-to-fail capitalist regime institution.
- I read the terms regarding mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. Both OpenAI and Anthropic had similar holdbacks AFAICT. [0]
> The Pentagon has agreed to OpenAI's rules for deploying its technology safely in classified settings, though no contract has been signed, a source familiar with the talks tells Axios.
> Why it matters: The Pentagon has blasted OpenAI rival Anthropic for days, contending its red lines for AI use in the military -- mass surveillance and autonomous weapons -- are philosophical and "woke."
> Now, the department, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment, appears to have accepted OpenAI's similar conditions.
One big difference
OpenAI exec becomes top Trump donor with $25 million gift [1]
I guess that makes it "less woke". This is reprehensible political bullshit.

- Am I the only one who claims that Claude always was better than gpt? Used them both in parallel (each for it's own set of tasks) for a long time, an now gpt isn't worth paying for (tbh, rarely use it for anything lately) - regardless of news.
- Great timing, especially since Anthropic has been shipping huge improvements in their iOS app. Now they've replaced their Stone Age audio input and added live mode, the iOS experience is a lot closer to ChatGPT's (though still lacking a bit)

- I love Claude, but I’m personally rooting for Dick’s Sporting Goods to take the #1 spot
- The sheer irony of admitting spying on the global population from both.
- Considering App Store Ranking is based on recent volume, this just says that a lot of people download Claude over ChatGPT in the last 24-48 hours.
This a nothing burger
- Wait till the tiktok influencers hear about this and jump on the bandwagon. Anthropic will keep winning

- For 50 years we've known EVERYTHING Trump touches turns to mierde.
Sam thought he was special. He is not.
- It was inevitable.

- So dumb, I have to think it's astroturfed. Anthropic states they're not willing to help with autonomous weapons because it's not good enough yet, and suddenly everyone cancels their OAI subscription? I just don't get it

- I went the opposite and deleted Claude and replaced it with OpenAI - The money the US Military will bring in is going to elevate ChatGPT to levels the others cannot match
